Navigating the Ups and Downs of Parenting

Most of us had an idealized version of the family that we wanted to create and the life that we wanted to live as parents. We agonized over baby names, envisioned adorable little mini versions or ourselves or our partners, we decorated a nursery, we drifted away into daydreams of how amazing our own tiny humans would be.Some of us envisioned sitting around the dinner table chatting with our children about their day at school and the fun things that they did with their friends …Riding bikes or going for a walk around the neighborbood together …We dreamt of baking, doing crafts, going for hikes, playing in the pool, going camping, playing board games, hosting slumber parties, spending weekends with the grandparents and cousins, watching our littles excel at soccer games or band concerts …And we were so excited to watch our children develop their own personalities and passions over time. For most of us, we wanted our children to build caring relationships within our family and in their community, to grow up and live out the values that we have instilled in them, to feel strong and confident and lovable and capable and comfortable in their own skin. And, unfortunately, that just isn’t always what life always looks like in your house.

Finding Help When Challenges Arise

Parenting, as you well know, is a journey filled with both wonderful, magical moments of peace, calm, and connectedness; there is always an abundance of love, sweet snuggles, laughter, and lightheartedness. However, it isn’t always like that; sometimes, the reality at home is far from the ideal. At times, things can become frustrating, confusing, overwhelming, and even scary; crying, moments of panic, inflexibility, fear, and occasional rage can all become part of the daily experience. You might even be facing physical aggression at home or school; if you’re like most of the parents we work with, you’ve read every parenting book, received more unsolicited advice than you can count, adjusted bedtimes and meal expectations, modeled desired behaviors, and offered rewards and consequences—all to no avail. You are exhausted and unsure of the next step; please know that you are not alone.
